Alan Smith makes bold claim about Jose Mourinho and Man United

Alan Smith is surprised Manchester United are moving to appoint Jose Mourinho

Alan Smith says Jose Mourinho isn’t a manager that you would associate with fitting Manchester United’s traditions.

The Portuguese coach is expected to fill the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford after United sacked Louis van Gaal on Monday night despite winning their first piece of silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement at the weekend.

Jesse Lingard’s extra-time winner secured a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final after the Red Devils came from 1-0 down to end their three-year trophy drought at Wembley.

Mourinho has been out of football management since he was sacked by Chelsea in December after a controversial and hopeless attempt to defend their Premier League crown.

Former Arsenal striker Smith expressed his surprise that United have earmarked Mourinho as their manager given the club’s philosophies and traditions.

“He isn’t a man you’d immediately associate with Manchester United because of the way he sets up his teams. He goes for that siege mentality type of attitude which does work. He will want to spend a fair bit of money. Interesting times in Manchester with Pep just up the road,” Smith told Sky Sports.
