Alan Smith believes Jose Mourinho will bring back some much-needed excitement at Old Trafford if the Portuguese coach is appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor.

The Red Devils sacked the Dutchman on Monday night ending a day of relentless speculation surrounding the former Barcelona and Bayern Muncih manager’s future at Old Trafford.

Mourinho is the clear favourite to succeed his former Barcelona manager at Old Trafford after he was given the chop at Chelsea in December following a poor start to the season.

Former Arsenal striker Smith believes Mourinho will easily deliver more attractive football than Van Gaal at Old Trafford given some of United’s turgid performances over the past 12 months.

“It will be a bit more exciting under Jose Mourinho,” Smith told Sky Sports.

“It couldn’t really be less dull as it has been at times under Louis van Gaal. He is a different sort of manager these days. The start of the season seemed to affect him. We will see how he comes back.”

The Red Devils ended a three-year wait to win silverware on Saturday evening thanks to Jesse Lingard’s extra-time winner, which sealed a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley.
