Arsenal want to sign Liverpool target Riccardo Saponara, according to Gianluca Di Marzio

Arsenal are ready to beat Liverpool to the signing of Empoli midfielder Riccardo Saponara, according to reports in Italy.

Arsene Wenger is believed to be on the look out for midfielders to strengthen his options after Arsenal confirmed the imminent departures of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky.

The 24-year-old Italian midfielder has impressed for the Serie A outfit in the 2015/16 season as Empoli finished in tenth place in the Italian top-flight.

Saponara finished with a respectable five Serie A goals, while the attacking midfielder created an impressive 11 assists for his Empoli team-mates in 33 top-flight games.

According to Italian football expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal are thought to be ready to offer £11.6m to secure the midfielder’s signing ahead of Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp has also been linked with a move for Saponara’s midfield team-mate Piotr Zielinski in recent days ahead of a potential £11m transfer to Anfield.
