Charlie Nicholas makes bold claim about the size of Man United
Charlie Nicholas says Manchester United aren't a big club any more
Charlie Nicholas says Manchester United aren’t a big club anymore after a disappointing end to their Premier League season.
The Red Devils missed out on a top-four finish after finishing behind Manchester City on goal difference despite a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in their final game.
The 20-time English champions did win the FA Cup thanks to victory over Crystal Palace but manager Louis van Gaal was sacked days later.
Jose Mourinho was announced as the club’s new manager on Friday morning as the Chelsea legend became the third boss since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Former Arsenal playmaker Nicholas warned Mourinho that he has a big rebuilding job on his hands to restore United to their former greatness.
“This isn’t a top club anymore and they’ve got a lot of rebuilding to do, which Louis van Gaal has done by introducing some exciting young players,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“I’ve never thought that the Jose Mourinho deal is a done one but the fans obviously haven’t been happy with the style of football and missing out on Champions League football is a real blow.”
United’s FA Cup success was their first piece of silverware since Ferguson stood down as United manager in 2013.
Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford last week after the Portuguese coach was sacked by Chelsea in December.
