Charlie Nicholas makes controversial claim about size of Man United

Charlie Nicholas explains why Manchester United are no longer a top club

Charlie Nicholas says Manchester United are no longer a top club.

The Red Devils are facing the prospect of playing next season without Champions League football after Louis van Gaal’s side were left two points adrift of Manchester City following Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat by West Ham United.

The 20-time English champions will host Bournemouth in their final Premier League game of the season but need Swansea City to do them a favour against Manuel Pellegrini’s side on Sunday afternoon.

United can find solace in the FA Cup final with Van Gaal’s side set to face Crystal Palace at Wembley on 21 May.

However, Nicholas believes winning the FA Cup won’t be sufficient to restore United’s top-club title after a disappointing season under Van Gaal.

“Manchester United are not a top club any more and if they win the FA Cup and get top four, then they’ll have achieved as much as Arsenal over the last two seasons,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is being heavily linked with the Old Trafford role.
