Danny Murphy makes claim about Liverpool’s title hopes next season
Danny Murphy has his say on Liverpool's Premier League hopes next season
Danny Murphy does not expect Liverpool to be able to challenge for the Premier League title next season under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds are currently gearing up for their first full campaign under the German coach since his appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October.
Liverpool ended up in eighth place in the Premier League table in Klopp’s first season at Anfield and were unable to win a trophy despite reaching the League Cup and Europa League finals.
The Reds are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window as Klopp looks to bring in reinforcements ahead of next season.
And although former Liverpool man Murphy is hoping to see the Reds challenge for a top-four finish, he feels that a title tilt may just be beyond their reach next term.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy said: “I think they’ve got the right man in place.
“I think if he (Klopp) can get the players he wants, convince them to come and then if he does get three or four in, five maybe, they can have a go at top four but I don’t think they can have a go at winning it.
“I think if they can get in the top four and have a good cup run again, you know a cup final again, then that would be OK but to expect to go from where they’re at now to challenging to win it in one summer of signings is probably a bit hopeful.”
Liverpool missed the chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League after they were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
