Diego Simeone to stay at Atletico Madrid despite Arsenal link, claims insider

Guillem Balague doesn't envisage Diego Simeone leaving Atletico Madrid amid Arsenal speculation

Diego Simeone won’t leave Atletico Madrid in the near future despite reports linking the manager with Arsenal, according to Guillem Balague.

The Madrid club booked their place in the Champions League final on Tuesday night after a 2-1 defeat by Bayern Munich was enough to secure their progress on away goals following a 1-0 win in the Spanish capital last month.

We’ll have to see in the future but certainly he wants to take Atletico to the next level and that will be to a new stadium with more financial possibilities

Simeone has been touted as a potential replacement for Arsene Wenger if the Frenchman opts to leave Arsenal in the summer following a difficult season across all competitions.

However, La Liga expert Balague poured cold water on talk of Simeone turning his back on Los Rojiblancos any time soon ahead of their Champions League final against Real Madrid.

“Simeone would be the first one to say that Atletico fits him like a glove” Balague told Sky Sports. “He’s perfect. They understand what he wants, he’s a former legend.

“He wants football that perhaps is not the prettiest – and sometimes he takes things to the limit – but it’s football that suits Atletico – counter-attacking football.

“He plays the card of: ‘We’re not very rich, we have to work hard for each other, it’s all about team values’. They have more money than most but it’s a card Atletico are happy to play.

“Can you take that to another club? We’ll have to see in the future but certainly he wants to take Atletico to the next level and that will be to a new stadium with more financial possibilities.”

Simeone led Atletico to La Liga title glory ahead of Barcelona and Madrid in 2014.
