Michael Owen states his FA Cup final prediction for Man United v Crystal Palace
Michael Owen looks ahead to the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace on Saturday
Michael Owen is backing Manchester United to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in Saturday’s FA Cup final clash at Wembley.
The Red Devils are gearing up for their final game of the season as they bid to end the season on a high by winning their first trophy since Louis van Gaal’s appointment as manager back in 2014.
United are aiming to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on qualification for next season’s Champions League, after they were pipped to a top-four finish by Manchester City in the Premier League.
Van Gaal watched his side warm up for the game with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford in their final game of the season on Tuesday night.
And former United striker Owen is backing the Red Devils to have the edge over the Eagles on Saturday evening.
Writing in his column for Bet Victor, Owen said: “You have to go back to November 2011 for the last time the Eagles beat Manchester United but that was in a cup tie the 2011-12 Capital One Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford.
“Palace won’t lack in confidence, however, and they have potential match-winners in Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie and the former would love to put one over his old club.
“United have their own match-winners of course and I have been particularly impressed by Anthony Martial this season and I think he can add to the 17 goals he has scored this term.
“That is an excellent return in a side that have, largely, struggled for goals and when you add eight assists I think it’s fair to say he has had an excellent season and he can end it with a coveted FA Cup winners’ medal.
“United’s first goal against Bournemouth earlier in the week went largely unnoticed, given the circumstances surrounding the game, but the axis of Martial, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney might be the difference between the sides in a game I am really looking forward to.
“United won their semi-final 2-1, Palace won their semi-final 2-1 and I think United can edge tomorrow’s final by the same scoreline.”
United finished fourth last season but were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.
