Gary Cahill’s four-word response when asked if Chelsea can win title next season
Gary Cahill discusses Chelsea's prospects in the Premier League title race next season
Gary Cahill has appeared to play down talk of Chelsea winning the title in their first season under new manager Antonio Conte.
The Blues limped over the finishing line in the Premier League this season after a 1-1 draw with newly-crowned champions Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on the final day of the season on Sunday.
The west London side finished a staggering 31 points behind the Foxes in the Premier League despite winning the title just 12 months ago under axed manager Jose Mourinho.
Italy head coach Conte has already been named as Mourinho’s permanent successor after Guus Hiddink took over the reins on an interim basis in December following the Portuguese’s sacking.
However, when asked if Chelsea could win the title in their first campaign with the three-time Serie A-winning coach at the helm, Cahill replied: Honestly I don’t know.”
The Blues defender, who has been named in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2016, was unsure whether a lack of European football could be a bonus:
“Time will tell with that one. Some players prefer to keep playing and playing, and they feel that is how you get the best out of them.
“Having the break between games is going to be something we are not used to but on the flip side it
gives you more time to prepare for games and recover going into the next one.
“Who knows and I can see positives and minuses for both of those situations. Time will tell.”
