Glenn Hoddle tells Man United legend to quit the club after Jose Mourinho arrival

Glenn Hoddle has his say on Ryan Giggs' future at Manchester United beyond the summer

Glenn Hoddle has told Ryan Giggs to leave Manchester United for his own good after the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager.

The Portuguese coach was finally appointed as United’s new boss on a three-year deal on Friday after days of speculation linking him with the Old Trafford job.

Mourinho is expected to bring his assistant manager Rui Faria with him to Old Trafford, meaning that Giggs’ role as number two is set to come to an end.

Mourinho is thought to be happy to have Giggs on his coaching staff at the club, but former England boss Hoddle feels that it will do him good to leave the club and further his career.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Hoddle said: “Giggs appears now to have a choice between serving Mourinho on the coaching staff as he did Louis van Gaal, or to make a break from a club he’s known as boy and man, and find his own way in management.

“I’ve got quite a clear view on this. If Ryan wants one day to be the manager of Manchester United, and we are led to believe that is his ambition, he will increase his prospects by going away to be a No1 at a Premier League or Championship club rather than stay and help Jose, no matter how instructive that would be.

“Being an assistant manager is one thing, being the man in charge quite another. If he wants to be a coach for the rest of his career, that’s fine, I’m sure there will always be a job for him at United.

“But to be a manager in his own right, you have to choose a different strategy. I don’t even think being Van Gaal’s No 2 was the best move, even though I could see the attraction of staying at a club you know so well.”
