Graeme Souness: Arsene Wenger needs a certain type of Arsenal signing
Graeme Souness discusses the type of signing Arsenal need to make in the summer transfer window
Graeme Souness says Arsene Wenger needs to sign “top men” in the summer transfer window to turn Arsenal into Premier League title contenders next season.
The north London side finished 10 points behind Leicester City in the title race this term after a disappointing second half of the season which saw the Gunners lose to Southampton, Manchester United and Swansea City.
Wenger was criticised for failing to sign an outfield player in last summer’s transfer window after Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech was the only arrival in an £11m deal from Chelsea.
The Arsenal manager has been handed carte blanche to go out and strengthen his squad this summer after a disappointing season which saw the 2014 and 2015 FA Cup winners fail to win any silverware.
Former Liverpool captain Souness believes Wenger needs to sign leader for his Arsenal side that are capable of having an immediate impact.
“If they can go out and get a couple of players. Not players who will be top men in a couple of seasons time,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“If they can get men ready to make an impression from the very first day next season, then they would be ready [to win the title].
“When you think of the changes at Chelsea and Manchester City and maybe Manchester United. Arsenal are more settled than any of the other big teams. We’ve two or three big players then they would be the team to beat.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004.
