Graeme Souness makes claim about Jose Mourinho and Chelsea legend
Graeme Souness claims that Jose Mourinho's relationship with John Terry could be destroyed
Graeme Souness has claimed that Jose Mourinho’s treatment of John Terry at Manchester City at the start of the season may have destroyed the pair’s relationship.
The former Chelsea manager controversially substituted Terry at half-time of their 3-0 loss to City in just their second game of the season as the Blues sought to defend their Premier League campaign.
The west London side went on to lost nine Premier League games by mid December, with a 2-1 defeat by eventual champions Leicester City culminating in Mourinho’s sacking in his third season at Stamford Bridge.
Terry put pen to paper on a new one-year contract on Wednesday afternoon as the Blues legend secured his future for another season despite previously suggesting that the four-time Premier League winners wouldn’t be offering him a new deal.
While the 35-year-old centre-half’s future is resolved, former Liverpool midfielder Souness believes his relationship with Mourinho is probably destroyed following the Potuguese’s treatment of his skipper.
“If I’m the club captain and he has taken me off… I don’t think John Terry was any worse than any other defender,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“He was making a statement. It was a dangerous road to go down. That would have hurt him badly. I am sure the relationship was damaged forever.”
Chelsea have already appointed Antonio Conte as their next permanent manager.
