Graeme Souness: What Mauricio Pochettino must teach Tottenham players

Graeme Souness explains what Mauricio Pochettino must teach his Tottenham players after disappointing end to season

Graeme Souness believes Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-1 defeat by Newcastle United has given Mauricio Pochettino the chance to teach his players a lesson ahead of next season.

The Lilywhites squandered the chance to finish above Arsenal for the first time in Premier League history after a 5-1 defeat by Newcastle United at St James’s Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners managed to hoist themselves above Spurs and into second place courtesy of a 4-0 victory over relegated Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season at The Emirates.

Spurs failed to win any of their last four games which cost them a title shot and second place following draws with West Brom and Chelsea before defeats by Southampton and Newcastle.

Former Spurs midfielder Souness believes Pochettino needs to drill into his side that top players bounce back from setbacks quickly after their disappointing end to the Premier League season.

“The future is bright for Spurs,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“The manager is angry a bit. This has given the manager a chance to point out that unless you’re totally switched on mentally, you won’t win games at this level. They knocked off completely if they’re losing 5-1 to a relegated side.

“They went through the motions – that’s unacceptable. It is an opportunity to learn that knocks do come along. But the big players bounce back immediately. That’s what Tottenham have to learn.”
