The Spain international won United’s player of the season award for a record third successive season after another eye-catching campaign for the 25-year-old at Old Trafford.
The shot stopper was on the brink of a move to Los Blancos last summer before his proposed £25m transfer fell through on La Liga’s deadline day much to the relief of United supporters.
De Gea has kept 15 clean sheets in 33 Premier League appearances for the 20-time English champions this season, which is the best of any goalkeeper in the top flight.
Former Madrid midfielder Campo believes De Gea is on the brink of becoming the world’s best goalkeeper, irrespective of whether he completes a move to the Spanish capital.
“De Gea can become the best keeper in the world if not already the best in the world,” said Campo, speaking to 888sport.
“In Spain, we have had great goalkeepers like Iker Casillas so the Spain national team has had a great selection of keepers now we have De Gea.
“Of course there is going to be speculation about his future after last summer, but we will have to wait and see if this is the year that he finally makes the switch.”
De Gea moved to United in a £19m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
