The 53-year-old was named as Louis van Gaal’s successor on Friday morning to end speculation linking the Portuguese coach with the Old Trafford position since December.
I have said for a long time that he doesn’t tick every box for United, but there is only one box they want ticking now — the one that says ‘trophies’
The 20-time English champions ended a three-year trophy drought last weekend as Van Gaal won the FA Cup thanks to a 2-1 extra-time victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley.
However, Van Gaal’s triumph wasn’t enough to save his job as United failed to challenge for the Premier League title for a third successive season since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
But former Liverpool defender Carragher is confident Mourinho will win regular silverware as United manager given his track record at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
“Whether you are a fan of his ways or not, you cannot deny that Mourinho is box office and will get United challenging for silverware straight away. The man is a serial winner,” Carragher told Daily Mail.
“Along with plenty of others, I have said for a long time that he doesn’t tick every box for United, but there is only one box they want ticking now — the one that says ‘trophies’.
“And they’ve got the best man for the job for that. In 14 attempts, he’s won eight titles across Europe. That’s more than a 50 per cent success rate!”
Mourinho won’t be managing United in the Champions League next year after the Red Devils finished in fifth place.
