Jamie Carragher makes bold claim about Arsenal, Tottenham

Jamie Carragher defends Tottenham Hotspur after Arsenal finished above their north London rivals

Jamie Carragher says Tottenham Hotspur have been a far better side than Arsenal this season despite the Gunners finishing above their north London rivals – again.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Lilywhites side required just a point to secure second place and a finish above Arsenal for the first time in the Premier League era.

However, Spurs lost 5-1 to Newcastle United at St James’s Park to finish the Premier League season with a three-game winless run since a 2-2 draw at Chelsea earlier this month.

Arsenal hoisted themselves above Tottenham and into second place thanks to a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium in their final game of the season.

While Carragher accepts that finishing behind their London rivals will be tough to accept, the former Liverpool defender is adamant that Spurs had the better season.

“I don’t think the big thing should be finishing behind Arsenal,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“If you ask me who had better season, I’d say Spurs. They were challenging for the title. At some stage, you thought they could win the league.

“With Arsenal that went away in February or March.

“Tottenham have had a better season although the table says Arsenal finished above them. It will leave a bitter taste.”
