Jamie Redknapp makes big claim about Liverpool manager and Steven Gerrard
Jamie Redknapp likens Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to former Reds captain Steven Gerrard
Jamie Redknapp believes Jurgen Klopp has provided Liverpool with the life required following Steven Gerrard’s departure from the Merseyside club last summer.
The charismatic 48-year-old German took over the reins of the 18-time English champions from Brendan Rodgers following October’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Klopp has already led Liverpool to two more finals than his predecessor, although the Reds lost to Manchester City on penalties in the League Cup, with the five-time European Cup winners suffered a 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League showpiece on Wednesday night.
Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp, who played alongside Gerrard during his spell as the club’s captain, believes Klopp has given the Merseyside outfit a much-needed lift since the retired England captain’s switch to Major League Soccer side La Galaxy.
“He has come into the club and lit the club up. He is a hero. That’s what Steven was on the field. He seems to have improved a lot of those players,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
Liverpool haven’t won a trophy since 2011 when Kenny Dalglish’s side eased to a penalty shootout victory over Cardiff City in the League Cup final at Wembley.
