The Brazilian playmaker has been one of the Reds’ star players in recent seasons and has developed into one of the top attacking midfielders in the Premier League since his transfer to the club from Inter Milan back in January 2013.
However, the 23-year-old’s form appeared to dip off in the closing stages of the campaign and he failed to score in any of his last seven appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Barnes rates Coutinho as one of the best in the business when he is on form, but the Liverpool legend has expressed his concerns about the Brazilian’s patchy form at times.
Writing in his column for Titanbet, Barnes said: “Philippe Coutinho has been great, but his form has dipped across the season, and inconsistency has been his issue.
“For me, although not quite Player of the Year material, Lucas has been great.
“The Brazilian was looking likely to leave last summer, but he’s done what he does best, which is get his head down, work hard and do a job whenever called upon.”
Liverpool missed the chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League after they were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in the Europa League final earlier this month.
