John Barnes issues warning to Liverpool over Sevilla
John Barnes previews the Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla
John Barnes has warned Liverpool that Sevilla won’t be any pushovers in next week’s Europa League final.
The Reds booked their place in the European showpiece courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate win against La Liga side Villarreal earlier this month.
Sevilla, meanwhile, are bidding to win the competition for the third successive season after beating Shakthar Donetsk in the last four.
And former Liverpool captain Barnes isn’t underestimating the threat that the reigning champions will post Jurgen Klopp’s side.
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Sevilla have won the tournament two seasons on the spin, so they will be no pushovers,” Barnes told Titanbet.
“A look over at the La Liga table makes it seem as though they are an average team, but they boast some very dangerous players, such as Kevin Gameiro, and have saved their best showings for the Europa League this term.”
Liverpool have won three Uefa Cups (in 1973, 1976 and 2001); they need one more to match Sevilla’s record of four successes in this competition.
Sevilla are the first club to contest the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League final for three seasons running.
They landed the Uefa Cup/Europa League for a record fourth time last term – and a second time in succession.
No team have won three consecutive editions of a major Uefa competition since Bayern Munich’s third straight European Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1975/76.
Neither side have lost a Uefa Cup/Europa League final, though it took penalties to settle two of Sevilla’s deciders.
