Lee Dixon: This is why Mesut Ozil struggled after Arsenal move
Lee Dixon explains why Mesut Ozil endured a quiet first season at Arsenal
Lee Dixon has revealed why Mesut Ozil was quiet in his first season at Arsenal following his club-record move to The Emirates.
The Gunners midfielder scored five goals in 26 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign at The Emirates after his £42.5m switch to Arsenal from Real Madrid in August 2013.
Ozil was criticised for a below-par start to his Premier League career, but the 27-year-old has become a key part of Arsene Wenger’s side over the past 24 months in north London.
The World Cup winner was the only Arsenal nominee for the player of the year in the Facebook Football Awards in London on Monday night.
Former Gunners defender Dixon shed light on why Ozil was quiet in his first season under Arsene Wenger before a return of six goals and 18 assists in his third campaign at The Emirates.
“He has found his feet a little bit,” Dixon told Facebook Football Awards.
“When he first came to the club he was quiet for me. I spoke to a couple of the coaches about him and they said he hadn’t come out of his shell yet. But second season and onwards, he has been a revelation.”
