Robbie Savage states bold prediction for Liverpool v Villarreal
Robbie Savage is tipping Liverpool to beat Villarreal but crash out on the away goals rule on Thursday night
Robbie Savage is backing Liverpool to beat Villarreal 2-1 but miss out on a place in the Europa League due to the away goals rule.
The Reds lost 1-0 to the La Liga outfit last week after Adrian Lopez scored an added-time winner for the hosts despite Jurgen Klopp’s side having 14 attempts on goal.
Liverpool’s 12-game unbeaten run in the Europa League came to an end at Estadio El Madrigal and now the Yellow Submarine are without defeat in their last 12 European outings.
While Savage believes the Merseyside outfit will secure a narrow victory on Thursday night, the former Leicester City midfielder reckons Villarreal will score and will progress on away goals.
“Villarreal are unbeaten in 12 games in Europa League against a Liverpool side that made changes at Swansea at the weekend,” Savage told William Hill.
“I am sure all the big guns will be back and Sturridge will start. I’m going to go for Liverpool win.
“I’m going to 2-1 Liverpool and Liverpool to go out on the away goal rule. I hope Liverpool win by more and go through. But I think that late goal may come back to haunt them.”
Liverpool’s 33 Uefa games against Spanish opposition have ended W13 D10 L10 (W4 D6 L5 at Anfield – W7 D4 L5 in Spain). That record includes a 5-4 after extra time against Deportivo Alaves in the 2001 Uefa Cup.
Villarreal’s record in 14 Uefa fixtures against English clubs reads W4 D6 L4 (W3 D4 L1 at home – W1 D2 L3 in England). They were without a victory in their last ten encounters with Premier League opponents going into the first leg of this tie.
