Man United, Tottenham suffer transfer blow after £36m target signs new contract
Saul Niguez ends speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League after signing five-and-half-year deal
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Saul Niguez after the forward signed a new five-year contract with Atletico Madrid.
The Spain Under-21 international had been linked with a potential move to the Premier League in recent weeks after his stunning performances for Los Rojiblancos.
Saul has scored four goals and has made two assists in 31 La Liga appearances, while the 21-year-old has netted three times and created two goals for his team-mates in 12 Champions League games.
Tottenham and United were thought to be ready to test Atletico’s resolve with a £36m offer for Los Rojiblancos’s starlet ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
However, Saul has ended speculation surrounding his future at Vincente Calderon after he put pen to paper on a new five-and-a-half year deal.
“I am very happy to continue to defend this shirt,” Saul is quoted as saying.
Saul could finish off a spectacular season with a Champions League winner’s medal ahead of their clash against Real Madrid on Saturday 28 May.
