Mark Lawrenson makes bold claim about Alberto Moreno and Liverpool
Mark Lawrenson reacts to Alberto Moreno's performance in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat by Sevilla on Wednesday night
Mark Lawrenson says Alberto Moreno has been consistently poor over the course of the season after the left-back’s disastrous performance in Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
England international Daniel Sturridge scored in successive Europa League games to break the deadlock with a sumptuous strike before half-time to edge Jurgen Klopp’s side into a slender lead.
However, Moreno’s poor clearance and reckless tackle directly led to Sevilla’s leveller at the start of the second half as Kevin Gameiro equalised from close range.
Sevilla, who were bidding to win the Europa League for a third successive season, scored again in 64th minute when Coke curled a superb finish past Simon Mignolet before he seal a 3-1 win with 20 minutes remaining despite the introduction of Christian Benteke and Divock Origi.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson wasn’t surprised by Moreno’s performance after watching his inconsistent performances in the Premier League.
“At 1-0 up at half time you have to manage the game which Liverpool failed to do. We have seen it so many times over the course of season, the left-back Moreno is good at getting forward but he cannot defend,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
Jurgen Klopp has now lost his last five major finals as a manager.
