Mark Lawrenson makes bold claim about Man United and Louis van Gaal
Mark Lawrenson discusses the future of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal
Mark Lawrenson believes Manchester United will sack Louis van Gaal if the Reds Devils finish in fifth place.
The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has been facing speculation surrounding his long-term future at Old Trafford throughout most of the 2015/16 campaign.
United miss the chance to hoist themselves about Manchester City and into fourth place after a 3-2 defeat by West Ham United on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils can still finish fourth if United beat Bournemouth and Swansea City can do Van Gaal’s side a favour against the Citizens on Sunday.
Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland international Lawrenson believes Van Gaal’s time is up at Old Trafford should United miss out on top four.
“If United finish fifth, then I think that is it for manager Louis van Gaal – he would go no matter what happened in next week’s FA Cup final,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“The United machine is not set up to win domestic cups, it is set up to be in the Champions League every season – that is what that club is about.”
The Red Devils still have a FA Cup final to look forward to on Saturday 21 May when United will face Crystal Palace.
The 20-time English champions were unbeaten in four Premier League games before their 3-2 loss to West Ham.
