Granit Xhaka has rejected claims that he is a similar player to a young Bastian Schweinsteiger after the midfielder finally signed for Arsenal on Wednesday.

There has been plenty of speculation linking Xhaka with a move to the north London club in recent days and his transfer finally went through on Wednesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old becomes Arsenal’s first signing of the summer transfer window as Arsene Wenger looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Ottmar Hitzfeld recently said that Xhaka reminds him of a young Schweinsteiger.

But the 23-year-old midfielder has moved to distance himself from those comparisons and insists that he sees himself as his own player.

Speaking in his first interview with Arsenal Media, Xhaka said: “If Ottmar Hitzfeld says that then it’s a big compliment.

“Ottmar is a big coach and a good gentleman.

“I don’t know if I’m a young Schweinsteiger, I’m another player. I am Granit Xhaka.”

Arsenal ended up in second place in the Premier League table last season after pipping Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the campaign.
