Paul Merson: Liverpool need to sign this many players to challenge next season
Paul Merson explains how many players Liverpool need to sign
Paul Merson believes Liverpool are five or six players short of having a squad capable of winning the Premier League title next season.
The Reds finished in eighth place in the table this term after focusing their energies on their Europa League campaign at the expense of their Premier League fortunes.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side squandered a 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 to reigning champions in Sevilla in Basel on Wednesday night, which means Liverpool won’t have any European football next term.
The Reds are currently priced at 8/1 with Paddy Power to win the Premier League title next season – only Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are priced shorter.
Former Arsenal playmaker Merson explained how many players Liverpool need to challenge for the Premier League title next season:
“LFC are five or six players short.”
Liverpool haven’t won the English top-flight crown since 1990.
The Reds have finished second on two occasions under Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers: 2009 and 2014.
