Paul Merson makes bold claim about Jose Mourinho and Man United
Paul Merson doesn't see the point of Manchester United sticking with Louis van Gaal
Paul Merson has warned Manchester United that Jose Mourinho won’t wait around forever.
The Red Devils still haven’t made an announcement concerning Louis van Gaal’s long-term future at Old Trafford despite relentless speculation linking Mourinho with the Old Trafford job.
What’s the point in Van Gaal staying for a year, bringing in more players and then leaving after his contract?
The 53-year-old refused to shed any light on reports that he will become the next United manager in a recent interview following the Red Devils’s 3-2 defeat by West Ham.
The 20-time English champions need to beat Bournemouth and hope Swansea City can do them a favour against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in the top-four race.
And even if United should finish in the top four and win the FA Cup, Merson believes it is time for a change at the 13-time Premier League winners.
“I don’t think he will stay. You need to look at the all-round picture,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Jose Mourinho is available but he won’t wait around forever. He won’t want to put out a fire at the start of next season. He will want to come in over the summer and bring his own players.”
Merson added: “What’s the point in Van Gaal staying for a year, bringing in more players and then leaving after his contract? They could make the decision now and start building for the future.
“For me, you make the decision and go and get Mourinho.”
Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December after a disastrous start to the defence of their Premier League crown.
The 53-year-old has previously managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
