Paul Merson: My message for Arsenal after finishing behind Tottenham
Paul Merson runs the rule over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur's season
Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur were unfortunate to finish behind Arsenal after an impressive season for the Lilywhites.
Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive side required just a point to secure second place and a finish above Arsenal for the first time in 21 years in the Premier League.
However, Spurs lost 5-1 to Newcastle United at St James’s Park to finish the Premier League season with a four-game winless run since a 1-1 draw with West Brom at the end of April.
Arsenal hoisted themselves above Tottenham and into second place thanks to a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium in their final game of the season.
The 2014 and 2015 FA Cup winners still finished 12 points behind Premier League champions Leicester City despite being touted as favourites earlier in the season.
Speaking to Fantasy FC podcast, Merson admitted that Tottenham didn’t deserve to trail their north London rivals: “They didn’t deserve to do that. It just covers over the cracks.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004.
