Paul Merson’s one-word response when asked if Liverpool can win title next season

Paul Merson plays down the chances of Liverpool winning the Premier League title next season

Paul Merson has poured cold water on talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League title next season.

The Reds finished in eighth place in the top-flight table after a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in their final game of the Premier League season on Sunday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side missed out on a place in next season’s Champions League after a 3-1 defeat by reigning champions Sevilla in Wednesday night’s Europa League final.

However, with no European football next season, the 18-time English champions have been touted as potential title contenders, similar to their incredible 2013/14 season.

When asked on Fantasy FC podcast whether he believes Liverpool can win their first-ever Premier League crown next term, former Arsenal playmaker Merson replied: “No.”

The Reds finished as Premier League runners-up behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side in 2009.

Liverpool were beaten to the top-flight crown by United’s derby rivals Manchester City in 2014 despite leading the Premier League with three games to play.
