Peter Schmeichel urges Manchester United to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to complete a deal to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the striker’s future.
The Sweden international is set to become a free agent in the summer when the 34-year-old’s contract expires at the end of June during what should be his final European championships.
The 20-time English champions were thought to be leading the race to sign the former AC Milan and Barcelona striker as the Red Devils look to bolster their attacking options.
However, Ibrahimovic’s agent Mino Raiola poured cold water on reports suggesting that United had offered his client a one-year contract with the possibility of a further year extension.
Former United captain Schmeichel is desperate to see the Red Devils get the deal over the line ahead of the summer transfer window.
“I read about Ibrahimovic in the newspapers,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports News HQ.
“I would love for him to come to Manchester United, I’ve said this for a long time. He was born to play for Manchester United.
“He’s like an Eric Cantona, who can inspire all the guys in the dressing room but also the supporters.
“That’s what it’s all about. It’s not about having a Sunday nap at Old Trafford.”
Ibrahimovic scored a staggering 38 Ligue 1 goals this season – only Luis Suarez scored more in one of Europe’s five major leagues.
