Phil Neville says Jose Mourinho needs to build an English spine to secure long-term success at Manchester United.

The Red Devils named Mourinho as their new manager on Friday morning to end months of speculation linking the Portuguese coach with Louis van Gaal’s role at Old Trafford.

While the Dutchman was much-criticised in the 2015/16 season for his perceived dull football, Van Gaal was credited with giving young players such as Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard a chance to shine in the United side.

Neville was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant United sides of the 90s and early 00s as the legendary Scot placed his faith in British talents such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Gary Neville.

And the retired United defender believes Mourinho needs to complement his big-money signings with an English spine in order to secure sustained success as Red Devils boss.

“United will always be challenging for the best players and the fans always demand the best players and with Jose there they will have a better chance of recruiting the best players,” said Neville, speaking exclusively to Carlsberg.

“But from a Man United point of view you want to see the spine being English and building something for the next fifteen years and now just for now. You also want to continue providing a pathway for the young players breaking through.”

United finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season.

Phil Neville met England fans at The Three Lions pub in Manchester as part of Carlsberg’s ‘Pubstitutions’ campaign. Read the full interview with Phil Neville here including his thoughts on how Rashford can have the same impact this summer as Owen in ’98
