Phil Thompson makes bold claim about Cristiano Ronaldo and Man United
Phil Thompson says Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Man United hinges on whether Jose Mourinho replaces Louis van Gaal
Phil Thompson has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo’s rumoured return to Manchester United hinges on whether Jose Mourinho replaces Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
The Portugal international has been linked with an emotional return to Old Trafford in recent months amid reports that Madrid are looking to offload the 31-year-old.
Van Gaal is facing an uncertain future at the 20-time English champions after United suffered a blow in their bid to finish in the top four following Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat by West Ham.
Mourinho has been linked with the Red Devils position regularly over the past six months since the 53-year-old was sacked by dethroned Premier League champions Chelsea in December.
Former Liverpool defender Thompson believes Ronaldo’s future will remain unclear until Mourinho’s next job is decided.
“There’s also been the talk that they’re still harbouring the idea of bringing back Cristiano Ronaldo, who also has Mendes as his agent, so Mourinho coming in could sway that,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
Ronaldo won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and three League Cups during six seasons at Old Trafford.
