Joe Gomez thanked Liverpool fans for all their support during a tough year as the defender celebrated his 19th birthday with some cake on Sunday.

The England Under-21 international made a bright start to his Reds career after he initially managed to dislodge Alberto Moreno from the Liverpool side under Brendan Rodgers.

However, Gomez suffered a serious knee injury during international duty days after Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as the Northern Irishman’s successor.

The former Charlton Athletic defender didn’t make another appearance for Liverpool in the 2015/16 season as he recovered from the setback.

But Gomez appeared to be in a good place as he posted the above snap of his 19th birthday cake on Instagram and wrote the following message:

The versatile defender made one assist in five Premier League appearances before his season-ending knee injury.
