Chelsea number one Thibaut Courtois posts a message for the Blues supporters on his Instagram page

Thibaut Courtois has apologised to Chelsea supporters for missing Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool amid reports linking the goalkeeper with a move to Anfield in the summer.

Guus Hiddink’s side produced one of their better performances this season as Eden Hazard broke the deadlock with a superb first-half opener on Merseyside.

However, Courtois’s understudy Asmir Begovic misjudged a late cross to allow Christian Benteke to equalise for the hosts in the final minutes of the game.

The 24-year-old Belgium number one has been linked with a controversial move to Merseyside in recent weeks after a disappointing campaign at Stamford Bridge.

But Courtois made no reference to his future as he explained his absence against Liverpool to the Chelsea fans on Instagram.

Courtois wrote: “I want to thank everybody for the birthday wishes yesterday! Disappointed I couldn’t play because of illness. #CFC”

The former Atletico Madrid shot stopper was a key part of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side that won the Premier League title last season.
