Ray Wilkins: This is what Jose Mourinho will bring to Man United

Ray Wilkins is backing Jose Mourinho to be a success should he be appointed as Manchester United's next manager

Ray Wilkins is backing Jose Mourinho to restore Manchester United to the top of English football following the sacking of Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman has been given his marching orders after two seasons in charge at Old Trafford, less than two days after he led the Red Devils to the FA Cup title.

The pressure had been mounting on Van Gaal after he failed to guide his side to qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Mourinho has been hotly tipped as the leading candidate to take over at Old Trafford, and he is now the heavy favourite to take charge following the news of Van Gaal’s departure on Monday.

And former Chelsea coach Wilkins is backing the former Real Madrid to have an instant impact at Manchester United.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday, Wilkins said: “I hate seeing managers getting relieved of their posts, it is the most horrible thing in the world.

“If they were to go for Jose it would be a good choice and he is the right person to take them forward.

“Manchester United want to win and he will bring winning days back to United. He is very intense and hopefully he will bring though some young players.

“But when he brings in players he will bring in players of the highest quality.”
