Rene Meulensteen makes bold claim about Jose Mourinho and Man United
Rene Meulensteen expresses his doubts over Jose Mourinho as Man United's next manager
Rene Meulensteen believes if Jose Mourinho was the right man to manage Manchester United then he would have been appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in 2013.
The Portuguese coach was thought to be interested in succeeding the United legend at Old Trafford but David Moyes was announced as the next Red Devils manager.
Mourinho eventually took over Chelsea later that summer before he guided the west London side to Premier League and League Cup glory in 2015.
The 64-year-old hasn’t got too much right in his second season at United and the former Ajax and Barcelona manager is being tipped to be replaced by Mourinho at the end of the season.
However, Ferguson’s former assistant coach Meulensteen isn’t sure whether Mourinho is cut out to manage the 20-time English champions.
“It’s not a secret that he would like the job and he’s been a very successful manager in England and across Europe but does he know what it takes to make United like it was under Sir Alex Ferguson? I’m not so sure because then you have to wonder why he didn’t succeed Sir Alex Ferguson,” said Meulensteen, speaking to exclusively to 888 sport.
Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December after a disastrous start to the defence of their Premier League crowns saw them lose nine games in five months.
