Manchester United should forget about appointing Jose Mourinho as manager and turn to Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, according to Rene Meulensteen.

The Red Devils are facing an uncertain future amid reletness speculation suggesting that the axed Chelsea manager could take over the reins in the summer.

Louis van Gaal has struggled with the rumours throughout the 2015/16 campaign and hasn’t been helped by United’s failure to finish in the top four for the second time in three seasons.

His compatriot Ronald Koeman led Southampton to a sixth-place finish this season despite seeing his best players leave for bigger clubs since taking over in 2014.

Former United assistant manager Meulensteen believes Koeman would be an excellent choice to replace Van Gaal if the Red Devils decide to make a change.

“I know Ronald reasonably well and he’s done a tremendous job at Southampton. He has carried on the style they were playing before he came in and he’s a good manager. He likes to play the right way so I’m not surprised at the rumours that Everton want to lure him away so who says Manchester United might not be another bigger club?” said Meulensteen, speaking to exclusively to 888 sport.

The 20-time English champions can still end the season with some silverware if United beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
