Rio Ferdinand makes bold claim about Memphis Depay and Man United

Rio Ferdinand questions Memphis Depay's long-term future at Man United

Rio Ferdinand believes Netherlands international Memphis Depay is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United.

The Red Devils winger was omitted from Louis van Gaal’s match-day squad for United’s 2-1 extra-time win against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Memphis has endured a tough first season at Old Trafford despite linking up with his former national team head coach after a £25m move to United in last summer’s transfer window.

The 22-year-old Dutch forward has only scored twice in 29 Premier League games for the 20-time English champions, with 13 of those appearances coming from the bench.

Former United defender Ferdinand questioned the winger’s long-term future at the Red Devils following Memphis’s snub by Van Gaal for the FA Cup final on Saturday evening.

“You [would have] thought they would just get him on the bus to get here, just to have the experience to come here and see what it’s like,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“It’s a great occasion. Next season he’s going to want to be here and want to be part of it. This doesn’t send out a positive message at all.

“For the future, it doesn’t seem right.”

Juan Mata cancelled out Jason Puncheon’s FA Cup final opener in the 82nd minute at Wembley to help Van Gaal avoid an embarrassing defeat.

United substitute Jesse Lingard scored the winner in extra-time to secure the club’s first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson stood down as manager in 2013.
