Rio Ferdinand reacts to Manchester United's 2-1 extra-time victory over Crystal Palace in FA Cup final
Rio Ferdinand was pleased to see Manchester United win the FA Cup in “the United way” after Jesse Lingard scored an extra-time winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley.
Palace substitute Jason Puncheon broke the deadlock with 12 minutes remaining after the former Southampton winger volleyed past United goalkeeper David De Gea from close range.
However, the Red Devils were level just three minutes later after Wayne Rooney broke past the Palace defence with a brilliant run before his cross was turned past Wayne Hennessy by Juan Mata, with help from Marouane Fellaini.
England international Chris Smalling was sent off for a second bookable offence on the stroke of half-time in extra-time to leave Louis van Gaal’s side facing 15 minutes with only 10 men.
But United substitute Lingard rifled an instinctive finish past the Palace goalkeeper to score what proved to be the winner with nine minutes remaining at the home of English football.
“That is the Manchester United way to win, win it in the latter stages of the game,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “It is great to see a Manchester United player from Manchester score the winning goal like that.”
Ferdinand added: “This moment will last with him for the rest of his life.”
United’s 2-1 extra-time win was their first triumph in the competition since 2004.
