Shaun Goater: Reported Liverpool target could stay at Man City
Shaun Goater believes Yaya Toure could still have a future at Manchester City
Yaya Toure could stay at Manchester City beyond the end of the season despite interest from Liverpool, according to Shaun Goater.
The Ivory Coast international still has a year remaining on his current Citizens contract ahead of the arrival of his former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola from Bayern Munich.
The Champions League-winning manager sold Toure to City during his time in charge of Barcelona, and his imminent arrival has prompted reports the powerful midfielder will almost certainly be sold in the summer transfer window.
However, former City striker Goater believes the 34-year-old could still have a role to play at the Etihad outfit next term under Guadiola if his notorious agent Mino Raiola keeps quiet.
“As long as his agent keeps talking then yeah but we all read things into Pep letting Yaya go at Barcelona. Maybe we can get another year out of him because he knows the Premier League well. If he is allowed to play and his agent does less talking then that’s how it could play out,” said Goater, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“He has scored big goals in big games and elevated the club. When he is gone we’ll really appreciate and recognise what he done and for me he will go down as one of the great legends. Along with other brilliant players he brought the club out of the shadow of Manchester United.”
Toure has scored 72 goals in 263 appearances for the Eastlands outfit during a six-season stay at the Etihad Stadium.
The Ivorian midfielder has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup twice since swapping City for Barcelona.
