Stan Collymore makes controversial claim about Tottenham
Stan Collymore raises questions about Tottenham Hotspur's defence
Stan Collymore has questioned whether Tottenham Hotspur have the best defence in the Premier League after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Southampton at White Hart Lane.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side extended their winless run to two games in the Premier League after Ronald Koeman’s side sprung a surprise against Spurs.
In fact I’d say if that’s the leagues best defence, then defending in the league just isn’t very good
Heung min-son broke the deadlock in the 13th minute but Steven Davis scored either side of half-time to secure three points for the visitors.
Tottenham still have the best defence in the Premier League despite Southampton’s 2-1 win after conceding just 31 times in 37 top-flight games.
However, former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest striker Collymore wasn’t impressed with Pochettino’s back four following their defeat at White Hart Lane.
“I was at Spurs [on Sunday] and although they are exciting going forward, I just didn’t see the defensive greatness which has them as the league’s best defence,” Collymore told Boylesport.
“In fact I’d say if that’s the leagues best defence, then defending in the league just isn’t very good, something again I’ve been saying for years.”
Collymore added: “Shane Long, a good but not great central striker tortured the Spurs back four and on another day, with better finishing he may have been walking away with a couple of goals under his belt.”
Tottenham are 10 points behind Premier League champions Leicester City ahead of their trip to Newcastle United on Sunday.
Spurs are two points clear of bitter derby rivals Arsenal as Tottenham look to finish above Arsene Wenger’s side for the first time in Premier League history.
