Stan Collymore: Man United need to build future around these three players
Stan Collymore says David De Gea, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are the future of Man United
Stan Collymore says Manchester United need to build their future around David De Gea, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils have endured a disappointing season in the Premier League although a top-four finish remains a slim possibility if Arsenal can do their rivals a favour and beat Manchester City this weekend.
Louis van Gaal’s side do have the consolation of a FA Cup final to look forward to after a 2-1 victory over Everton in the round of last four thanks to Martial’s winner at Wembley.
The 64-year-old head coach could be leaving United in the summer amid speculation Jose Mourinho will take over the reins from his former boss at the end of the season.
Former Liverpool striker Collymore believes whoever is in charge at United over the summer needs to rebuild the side around De Gea, Martial and Rashford, as well as Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
“There needs to be a clear out, a new direction built around Rashford, Martial and De Gea,” Collymore told BoyleSport.
“Three players, along with Fosu-Mensah who should be United mainstays for years to come, but I wonder if Van Gaal will really revolutionise anything or use Fergie’s Carrick, Moyes’ Fellaini and big time charlies like Depay to build a future?
“I think that last idea is very unpalatable for United fans and I understand why.”
United are in fifth place in the Premier League table and four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
