Steve McManaman reacts to Alberto Moreno’s performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Sevilla
Steve McMananan has his say on Alberto Moreno's performance in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat by Sevilla
Steve McManaman described Alberto Moreno as Sevilla’s best player after the left-back’s poor display in Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat in the Europa League final.
Daniel Sturridge, who was starting just his second Europa League game in Liverpool’s last five European outings, broke the deadlock with a sumptuous before half-time to edge Jurgen Klopp’s side into a deserved lead.
However, Moreno’s poor clearance and reckless tackle resulted in Sevilla’s equaliser inside 30 seconds of the second half after Kevin Gameiro finished from close range.
The reigning champions were ahead in the 64th minute when Coke curled a superb finish past Simon Mignolet and the Sevilla playmaker added his side’s third with 20 minutes remaining.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder McManaman didn’t hold back in his assessment of Moreno after the 23-year-old struggled against his former employers.
BT Sport host Jake Humphries revealed that the ex-Reds winger felt Moreno was Sevilla’s best player before the Champions League winner went on to critique Moreno’s performance.
“He just went wandering at times. He wanted to go forward, which is great but he is a left-back,” McManaman told BT Sport.
“His principle job is to get the ball, defend well, clear your lines, communicate and be in the right position.”
Moreno moved to Liverpool from Sevilla in a £12m deal following their first Europa League success in 2014.
