Thierry Henry: This is where Tottenham must improve next season
Thierry Henry says Tottenham Hotspur showed a mental weakness in the final weeks of the season
Thierry Henry has accused Tottenham Hotspur of being mentally weak in their final four games of the Premier League season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffered a surprise 5-1 loss to Newcastle United in their final game of the Premier League season to surrender second spot to north London rivals Arsenal.
Tottenham ended the season on a four-game winless run following stalemates with West Brom and Chelsea followed by back-to-back defeats by Southampton and Newcastle.
Former Arsenal striker Henry believes Pochettino’s young Tottenham side showed their mental fragility in the closing weeks of the Premier League season.
“You need to concentrate yourself and see what you can achieve,” Henry told Sky Sports.
“They were chasing Leicester for a long time to be a champion but now they finished third behind Arsenal.
“The way they collapsed mentally. We have been praising them. Saying they were great, mentally strong, technically and physically. They showed something in the last games that you have when you have a team of a lot of youngsters.
“They were mentally weak. They need to learn and come back stronger.”
Arsenal managed to hoist themselves above Tottenham and into second place courtesy of their 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Tottenham were pushing Leicester City all the way in the title race before a 2-2 draw with London rivals Chelsea handed the Premier League crown to the Foxes with two games to play.
