Three reasons why Liverpool shouldn’t sell Adam Lallana amid Tottenham speculation

Three reasons why Liverpool should keep hold of England midfielder Adam Lallana beyond the end of the season

Lallana starting to find form

It has taken Adam Lallana the best part of 18 months but the Liverpool playmaker is finally starting to find some excellent form for the Reds. So much was expected of the 28-year-old after his moved to Anfield in a £25m deal from Southampton under Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor, Brendan Rodgers. However, towards the end of the Northern Irishman’s reign, Lallana couldn’t get into the first-team. It is all change under Klopp, particularly in the final third of the season. Lallana has been a mainstay, rewarding his manager’s faith with a return of five goals and four assists in his last 19 games for Liverpool.

Strengthen a direct rival

Lallana has been linked with a proposed reunion with former Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino. The retired Argentina international has enjoyed great success this season, leading Spurs to what looks like a second-place finish, barring disaster at Newcastle United. Selling Lallana to a direct rival for a top-four place next season would be folly, particularly given Pochettino enticed some excellent form from Lallana during his Saints days. While Klopp is starting to get the best out of the 28-year-old, there is no doubt that Pochettino knows all the right buttons to press.

Partnership with Liverpool playmakers

One of the most exciting aspects of Lallana’s current run is his link-up play with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge. Good players help raise the performances of their team-mates, and as Liverpool as a unit continue to improve, so does Lallana. In particular, Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana have the potential to form a devastating partnership with a summer of adapting to Klopp’s methods under their belts. As we saw at Chelsea and Manchester City, the trio can carve open defences. Dietmar Hamann believes this is just one reasons why Liverpool shouldn’t sell Lallana: “If the penny drops, he is a game-changer and with [Roberto] Firmino and [Philippe] Coutinho and either [Divock] Origi or [Daniel] Sturridge he forms a pretty formidable front four.”
