Toby Alderweireld sends Twitter apology to Tottenham supporters

Toby Alderweireld has apologised to Tottenham Hotspur supporters after Arsenal finished above Spurs in the Premier League table.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Lilywhites side required just a point to secure second place and a finish above Arsenal for the first time in the Premier League era.

However, Spurs lost 5-1 to Newcastle United at St James’s Park to finish the Premier League season with a three-game winless run since a 2-2 draw at Chelsea earlier this month.

Arsenal hoisted themselves above Tottenham and into second place thanks to a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium in their final game of the season.

Tottenham centre-half Alderweireld, who has been one of the Lilywhites’s best players this season, took to Twitter to send a frank apology to the club’s supporters.

Alderweireld moved to Tottenham in a £11.5m deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid last summer despite interest from his former employers Southampton.
