Alan Smith is expecting Granit Xhaka to firmly establish himself as a regular in the Arsenal first team next season following his arrival at the club last month.
Arsene Wenger moved quickly to bring the Switzerland international to The Emirates in a deal believed to be worth around £30m.
The north London side are still thought to be on the lookout for significant reinforcements during the summer transfer window after a largely disappointing season last term.
However, former Arsenal striker Smith says that he was pleased to see the club move quickly to bolster their midfield options following the departures of several key players.
Smith is quoted as saying by Sports Mole: “Arsenal needed another midfielder with Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini leaving the club so that left them short – they did need somebody else.
“I think it’s a good signing. He’s one of those players that I don’t think will shy away from the physical side of the game and along with Francis Coquelin, those two are defensive-minded midfielders. They might play together or just one of them, but he will hopefully bolster that midfield and give the defence good protection.
“I think it’s a good signing and good that it’s come early as well, which I think we all like to see.”
Arsenal ended up last season without a trophy after they finished 10 points behind champions Leicester City in the table.
The Gunners did, however, leapfrog Tottenham to seal a second-placed finish in the Premier League on the final day of the campaign.
