Alan Smith: This is who Arsenal must sign this summer
Alan Smith wants to see Arsenal sign a new striker in the summer transfer window
Alan Smith has urged Arsene Wenger not to be discouraged by Arsenal’s failed attempts to sign Jamie Vardy this summer and continue his search for new striker.
The north London side are thought to have tabled a bid to bring the Leicester City striker to The Emirates before Euro 2016, but Vardy opted against a move to Arsenal and instead committed his future to the Foxes.
Arsenal’s apparent bid for Vardy has signalled Arsene Wenger’s intention to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window as he bids to revamp his squad ahead of next season.
The Frenchman found himself under pressure last season after the Gunners failed to win a trophy and ended up 10 points behind champions Leicester City in the Premier League table.
And former Leicester and Arsenal man Smith feels that Wenger is still in need of signing a new forward in the summer transfer window.
Smith told Sky Sports News HQ: “Arsenal have to go again. They need a striker with Danny Welbeck out for the foreseeable future. They can’t rely on Olivier Giroud as the only striker – they had problems with that when he experienced a dip in form.
“They do need somebody else and in going for someone like Vardy, Arsene Wenger was obviously after a different type of player to Giroud, which makes sense.
“Someone quicker, who looks to get behind rather than coming towards the ball, so will be interesting to see who if anyone he does go for because as we know the good strikers out there, all the top clubs are after them.”
