Arsenal boss reveals he turned down reported Chelsea transfer target
Arsene Wenger reveals why he opted against signing Dimitri Payet for Arsenal...
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he opted against signing Dimitri Payet “very often” amid speculation linking the France international with Chelsea.
The France midfielder has earned plenty of new admirers for his impressive displays for West Ham United last season following his move to England.
Payet further enhanced his blossoming reputation by scoring France’s winner in their Euro 2016 opener against Romania last week.
The West Ham star is now being heavily linked with a move to Chelsea as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his squad ahead of his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
And Arsenal boss Wenger has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to sign Payet on a number of occasions because of the player’s “inconsistency”.
During a question and answer session with Konbini, Wenger said: “Yes [I thought about signing Payet]. Often. Very often, I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career.
“And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.
“I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded.”
Arsenal had to settle for a trophyless campaign last season as they finished second in the table and 10 points behind champions Leicester.
