Charlie Nicholas discusses the type of player Arsenal need to sign this summer

Charlie Nicholas has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign a vocal leader to bolster his squad this summer.

The Gunners have already snapped up one player in the close season after Granit Xhaka completed a £33m transfer to The Emirates from Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach last week.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Juventus striker Alvaro Morata and Napoli centre-forward Gonzalo Higuain in recent weeks.

However, former Gunners player Nicholas believes Wenger to need to find a leader along the lines of Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira to improve his squad.

“They still need a leader but not just a good speaker, one of real substance that can lead by example,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“All in all it’s been disappointing and that’s been reflected in the greatest ever pressure on Arsene Wenger. I’m happy for him to stay but he needs to realise where he’s made mistakes and address them now.”

Arsenal finished the season without any silverware after making premature exits in the Champions League and the FA Cup.

The Gunners did manage to restore some pride of pipping Tottenham Hotspur to a second-place finish in the Premier League table.
